Tim Wiggins, from the Isle of Wight, started as a mountain biker, before shifting to rowing with Ryde Rowing Club and finally at university came back to the bike and hasn't looked back since.

He has a bucket list full of exciting challenges from La Marmotte to the Pamir Highway, and he's already crossed off the South Downs in 24 hrs, L'Etape du Tour and the Welsh Dragon Ride. He loves to travel, and we thought, through our partnership with Freestak, that we'd ask Tim for what app's he relies on for his trips abroad.

01) Google Maps / Google Driving

  • Why I love it: It will pinpoint your location wherever you are in the world. Offline maps on Google Driving allow easy navigation, without using roaming data.
  • When I use it: Travelling abroad
  • What is different about it: Global reliability
  • Why I cannot be without it: I'd get lost, a lot!
  • Who told me about it: Google!

02) Twitter

  • Why I love it: I have never been a fan of location tracking, or checking in; but Twitter allows you to let your friends and family know you are safe and having a great time.
  • When I use it: Whenever I'm adventuring (@timwiggins1)
  • What is different about it: Global and easy to use
  • Why I cannot be without it: It is also great for crowdsourcing answers e.g. where is the best place to eat in xxxx?
  • Who told me about it: The world

03) Met Office Weather

  • Why I love it: Reliable and local weather forecasts and reports
  • When I use it: Everyday

  • Why I cannot be without it: I don't like being badly prepared for the weather
  • Who told me about it: Yachtmaster training

04) Blogger

  • Why I love it: Life is an adventure, and it can make for fascinating reading. My personal site lifeinthesaddle.cc uses the Blogger functionality, so I use the App to post short updates on my travels.
  • When I use it: Whenever I'm travelling without a laptop
  • What is different about it: It works well for a blogging app
  • Why I cannot be without it: Blogging on the web platform, on a mobile, is clunky

05) Train/Plane Apps (e.g. British Airways, National Rail)

  • When I use them: Everyday
  • What is different about them: It's safer than using an internet café for checking your bank account
  • Why I cannot be without them: Convenient and safe
  • Who told me about them: Banks

08) Google Drive

  • Who told me about it: Caxton

10) Strava

  • Why I love it: Route planning and tracking
  • When I use it: Touring and riding in new places
  • What is different about it: The App uses crowd-sourced ‘Popular’ roads to create route, which means these routes will always be on good cycling roads.
  • Why I cannot be without it: The App synchronizes particularly well with my Wahoo ELEMNT cycle computer.
  • Who told me about it: Social media (Twitter)
